The majority`s backing will not create political constraints on my  opposition role: Aram Vardevanyan on his election as Deputy  Parliament Speaker

ArmInfo. At today's session of the National Assembly of Armenia, Aram Vardevanyan was elected as Deputy  Speaker of Parliament by secret ballot, securing 53 votes, including support from members of the ruling Civil Contract  party.

Addressing journalists at a briefing following the vote, Vardevanyan  stated that this outcome from the ruling majority will not result in  political constraint. He emphasized that the position of a  parliamentary vice-speaker for an opposition representative is  provided for by the National Assembly framework, with its legitimacy  reinforced by citizens who voted for opposition forces. 

When asked whether he would chair the sessions, the deputy noted that  according to the National Assembly Charter, regular session  management primarily stems from the responsibilities of the Speaker,  though he considers such a scenario unlikely.

When asked about the ruling majority's support following three days  of intense discussions surrounding his nomination, the newly elected  Deputy Speaker noted that he would have preferred debates to focus on  concrete legal proposals, programmatic approaches, and solutions to  socially significant issues rather than personal discussions. Asked  to specify why the Civil Contract party supported his candidacy, he  pointed to constitutional regulations that mandate the election of  one of the Deputy Speakers of the National Assembly from among  deputies representing opposition factions.
