NCDC: Coliform bacteria detected in two re-sampled drinking water  samples in Byureghavan

ArmInfo. Total coliform bacteria have been detected in two re- sampled drinking water samples in the city of Byureghavan, located a half-hour drive from Yerevan, as reported by the press service of the National Center for Disease  Control and Prevention (NCDC) of the Ministry of Health of Armenia.

The NCDC clarified that the tests were conducted in connection with  cases of intestinal infections reported in Byureghavan starting July  17, 2026. No new cases have been registered, and two patients  continue to receive treatment in the hospital; their health condition  is assessed as satisfactory. The others have recovered and been  discharged from the medical facility. 

"Based on the laboratory results of the drinking water testing, total  coliform bacteria were detected in two re-sampled water samples.  Residents at the specified two addresses have been notified, while  the rest of the residents in the enlarged Byureghavan community can  continue using tap water," the NCDC stated.

The agency also warned that the presence of such bacteria can  contribute to the outbreak of intestinal infectious diseases.

Recall, on July 17, the Armenian Ministry of Health reported that  cases of intestinal infection had been detected in the Byureghavan  community of the Kotayk region, with six hospitalizations recorded. A  total of 15 calls were received overnight by the national ambulance  service. Later, former Deputy Speaker of the Armenian Parliament and  former Minister of Justice Arpine Hovhannisyan reported that she had  periodically tested the water supplied by Veolia Jur. According to  her, it was discovered that during the summer period, when water  supplies became scarce, the company began mixing it with artesian  water, which has high hardness. Therefore, as the former head of the  Armenian Ministry of Justice noted, this indicator exceeded the  permissible level established by the Ministry of Health in various  settlements across the country. Veolia Jur issued a statement  regarding the situation, assuring that the drinking water supplied to  consumers is under continuous, round-the-clock monitoring and meets  the required standards.
