The 3rd International Congress on Armenian Studies has commenced in Yerevan, dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of Mkhitar Sebastatsi, an outstanding spiritual leader, scholar, and founder of the Mekhitarist Congregation. Armenian studies scholars from leading universities and research institutions across 16 countries are taking part in the event.
During the opening ceremony, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan emphasized the importance of discussing key issues in Armenian studies and institutional work within the field, noting that the congress has become an effective platform for the development of Armenian studies.
"Three years of experience give us sufficient grounds to speak about the formation of a more institutional approach to Armenian studies and the consistent implementation of planned work. The community of Armenologists is expanding and developing, which is also one of the achievements of the congress. I am glad that we are advancing Armenian studies together," the minister said.
As part of the International Congress on Armenian Studies, a special exhibition dedicated to the 350th anniversary of Mkhitar Sebastatsi's birth opened in the research building of the Matenadaran. The Matenadaran museum is also scheduled to host the opening of the exhibition "Eternity Lasting One Year: New Acquisitions of the Matenadaran Manuscript Collection." In addition, a book festival will be held, featuring new publications in Armenian studies and the latest releases from the Matenadaran publishing house. The 350th anniversary of the prominent Armenian spiritual figure, scholar, poet, composer, and founder of the Mekhitarist Congregation, Mkhitar Sebastatsi, is included in the list of jubilee events of the Armenian Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports for 2026.
The Congress runs from July 22 to 24 at the Matenadaran with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, the Delegation of the European Union, the Embassy of Italy in Armenia, and representatives of Armenian spiritual manuscript centers.
