


ArmInfo. The person who committed an act of vandalism at the Surb Karapet (Saint Garabed) Armenian Cemetery in the Paglarbashi neighborhood of Uskudar in Istanbul on the night of July 7-8 has been arrested, as reported by Ermenihaber.am.
The source writes that M.K. was detained by security forces and remanded in custody by court order, but the motive for the vandalism at the cemetery remains unknown.
Earlier, the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople reported on its Facebook page that an unknown person entered the cemetery on the night of July 7-8, damaging six tombstones and a fountain. The Patriarchal Throne condemned this act, calling it a vile attack on sacred values and places of eternal rest. It also expressed hope that the perpetrator would be brought to justice.
According to open sources, Uskudar is one of the historical districts of Istanbul, where tens of thousands of Armenians lived before the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
