ArmInfo. Ashot Danielyan has officially announced his resignation from the post of Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Artsakh.
In a statement published on the Artsakh Parliament's Facebook page, Danielyan noted that the decision followed "long reflection, discussions, and consultations." He emphasized that when he assumed the position on May 21, 2025, his primary motivation was not personal gain or political ambition, but rather the urgent need to ensure the continuity of Artsakh's state institutions and to maintain a political voice for its people during a period of existential threat.
"Every decision and action of mine was directed toward one goal: protecting the rights of the people of Artsakh and preserving the continuity of statehood in the face of the new reality created in the Republic of Armenia," Danielyan stated.
According to him, throughout this entire period, he has been guided solely by national interests and his responsibility to the people of Artsakh. "After the forced displacement, when we found ourselves in Armenia, I, like many others, could have focused solely on family, starting a new life, a new job, and securing our future. This would have been a much easier path for me. But I chose not the easy path, but the imperative one. I took on this burden, understanding that in the most difficult moment, someone must continue to bear state responsibility, protect the rights of the people of Artsakh, and preserve the idea of Artsakh statehood. I could not allow the issue of preserving state institutions to remain unaddressed and neglected in the difficult circumstances that arose.
"In many cases, those who were willing to do anything to secure a position during Artsakh's better days were not by my side on this path. When the position represented opportunity, influence, and privilege, many sought it. When the work became a struggle, a source of pressure, an unbearable responsibility, and a matter of personal sacrifice, many simply left. I never aspired to this position. I stayed and continued to fight because I felt obligated to my father's memory, to our people, and to Artsakh," Danielyan added.. However, he said the false and fabricated rumors surrounding him recently, the unfounded accusations and slander spreading everywhere, also influenced this decision. "I do not want the targeted campaign against me to tarnish the reputation of the Republic of Artsakh, its state institutions, and the National Assembly in any way.
When the necessary unity and shared responsibility are lacking, one or a few individuals cannot consistently shoulder the entire burden. Therefore, this decision is also a conscious step aimed at preserving the state structure free from personal speculation and artificially created contradictions. Therefore, I resign from the post of Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Artsakh.
This resignation does not mean abandoning Artsakh. It does not mean abandoning the defense of the rights of our people and the struggle for which our family has already paid with our lives. This position is temporary. Artsakh, the pain of our people, the memory of our heroes, and the debt we owe them are eternal. I believe that the will of our people cannot be broken. The Artsakh issue cannot be considered closed as long as there is a people who have the right to their homeland, as long as there is a demand for its return, and as long as the memory of our fallen heroes obliges us not to give up. I am confident that the National Assembly and all state structures will continue their activities, remaining steadfast in protecting the rights of our people and achieving national goals," Danielyan added.
