
ArmInfo On the sidelines of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan had a meeting with Carl Skau, Acting Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP).
According to the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, ensuring the continuity of the programmes implemented by the WFP in Armenia was emphasized, aimed at strengthening the food system of Armenia, as well as enhancing resilience to emergencies.
The sides highlighted the role of the School Feeding programme in strengthening communities and fostering more resilient food systems. During the meeting, the prospects for cooperation and the implementation of joint initiatives within the framework of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), to be hosted by Armenia this year, were discussed. The Deputy Foreign Minister briefed his counterpart on the priorities and initiatives of the COP17 Presidency of Armenia.
The ongoing reform process within the UN was touched upon, emphasizing its importance in increasing the efficiency of UN operations and ensuring the full realization of its mandates.
The UN World Food Programme has been cooperating with Armenia since 1993. In recent years, the organization has been implementing programs in the country to develop sustainable food systems, improve emergency preparedness, and expand the national school feeding program, gradually transferring it to the Armenian government.
From 2010 to 2024, Russia has financed four stages of sustainable school feeding project in Armenia totaling $43 million. The fifth stage, aimed at developing a sustainable nutrition system in Armenia from 2025 to 2030, is currently underway, with Russia's targeted contribution to the UN WFP totaling over $25 million, providing high-quality meals to over 100,000 schoolchildren. The program aims to establish a sustainable national nutrition system.
