ArmInfo. The Environmental and Mining Inspectorate of Armenia has initiated a case regarding streams of yellowish water that overflowed in Kapan after heavy rain.
The agency's press service clarified that the case was initiated following the dissemination of a video online titled "Yellowish Water Floods Streets of Kapan During Rain" and the public's concerns. "We would like to inform you that on June 14 of this year, the Environmental and Subsoil Inspectorate initiated administrative proceedings in connection with the flow of yellow-orange water from the Kavart mine (a defunct copper smelter - ed.) onto the streets of Kapan, caused by heavy rainfall. As part of the investigation, relevant studies are being conducted, including water sampling to determine its composition and possible impacts," the Inspectorate reported.
According to the source, additional information on the laboratory test results and the progress of the investigation will be provided later. It is worth noting that this is not the first such case. Streams of yellowish water were also reported flowing from the abandoned mine in 2022.
