ArmInfo. The discussion of all issues related to Armenia's membership in the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) will take place at a narrow-format meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana on May 29, as stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova during a weekly briefing on May 28.
"I want to emphasize once again that the position of the Armenian leadership—that Yerevan will remain in the EAEU as long as its integration into the EU is underway—is unacceptable to the Russian side," the Russian diplomat said.
She recalled that the EAEU has provided Armenia with considerable benefits over the past 10 years – from high growth rates to low inflation, a strong national currency, and a large market.
"We still expect that Yerevan will follow the path of pragmatism—which is not about love for other countries, but about love for oneself. We hope that pragmatism and wisdom will prevail over emotions and alien interests. It is probably better to say 'foreign interests,' which are pulling the current authorities into a pointless and, most importantly, dangerous pursuit of the European dream. More than one skeleton already lies in that very pit of the European dream," Zakharova concluded.
