ArmInfo.Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu stated that Moscow regrets Yerevan's position on security issues within the CSTO. He made this statement at a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries of the Security Councils of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
According to Shoigu, many problems in the region can be more effectively resolved jointly, using the organization's mechanisms. However, he noted that the Armenian side, in his opinion, is choosing a different path.
"There are many problems, and it is much more effective to resolve them jointly. It's a shame that our Armenian partners in the organization don't understand this and are seeking protection from the immediate source of the threat," said Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, according to Life.ru.
He added that this course is the choice of the Armenian leadership, and it bears responsibility for the consequences for the future of the country and its people. Shoigu previously stated that Russia accounts for up to 98% of Armenia's agricultural exports. He also reminded his neighbors of Russia's role in defending its statehood in the 1990s. The Security Council Secretary noted that without Moscow, the republic would have lost its independence.
As a reminder, Armenia has been boycotting CSTO events since late 2022. In February 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia had effectively frozen its participation in the CSTO, as the organization had failed to fulfill its obligations to Armenia, which would inevitably have consequences. And on September 18, 2024, at the Second Armenian World Summit, Pashinyan declared that the CSTO poses threats to Armenia's security, its continued existence, sovereignty, and statehood.
