ArmInfo. Armenia cannot be a member of both the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU), and it won't be able to dance at two weddings, stated Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin.
"Being in two unions simultaneously is impossible by definition. As the saying goes, Armenia won't be able to dance at two weddings at the same time," Galuzin told reporters following a meeting of the Russian Security Council's special group on interactions with neighboring countries.
He also emphasized that Russia advocates for clarity in relations with Armenia, regarding its direction. "We want clarity regarding Armenia's direction," Galuzin said, RIA Novosti reports.
During talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on April 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that membership in a customs union with both the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is inherently impossible. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that the Armenian authorities were trying to straddle both ends of the spectrum, but this was detrimental to the development of bilateral relations with Russia. On May 9, Putin proposed discussing Armenia's EU plans at the next Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit.
On January 9, 2025, the Armenian government approved a draft law on the start of the EU accession process, proposed by the "Eurakve" civic initiative. The draft was sent to the Armenian parliament for approval. On March 26, the parliament passed the final reading and sent it to the president for signature. The document was signed on April 4 of that year. Moscow stated that Russia had conveyed to Armenia that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union was impossible.
