ArmInfo. The European Political Community (EPC) summit in Yerevan aims to fast-track Armenia's accession to the euro and the transatlantic community, complicating relations with Russia as much as possible and giving its response the connotation of a "Russian threat." This is how Federation Council Vice Speaker Konstantin Kosachev commented on the EPC summit in Yerevan.
"It is with a heavy heart that I write this blog. I'm reading the news from Yerevan about another European gathering on Armenian soil, which is sacred to many, including us Russians. Some time ago, two high- ranking Armenian representative – Prime Minister Pashinyan and Speaker Simonyan – fervently assured their interlocutors in Moscow (including in the Federation Council) that 'Yerevan sacredly honors the history of our brotherhood and will never (emphatically) never take any steps that could harm Russia.' As they say – end of quote, or, as diplomats say in such cases, 'the agreement wasn't even worth the paper it was written on,'" Kosachev wrote on his Telegram channel.
He also called the meeting in Yerevan inherently anti-Russian. According to him, so many Russophobes outside the EU haven't gathered in one place in a long time.
"The stated goal of the Armenian organizers is something like 'confirming Armenia's European choice before the parliamentary elections in a month.' However, the real goal is to fast-track Armenia's entry into the Euro- and transatlantic community, complicating relations with Russia as much as possible and connoting its response as a "Russian threat. This is a cynical and simple trick, similar to what was previously performed in the three Baltic republics, Moldova, and, unfortunately, Ukraine. Yet another betrayal by the top Armenian leadership—the stigma is already gone," he added.
Kosachev believes that behind all this are only their own opportunistic interests, the main one being to remain in power at any cost. "After all, no one is waiting for Armenia to join the European Union; this is nothing more than another scam by Brussels. But at the same time, everything is leading to a further degradation of Russian-Armenian relations, the high quality of which was hard-won and won by generations and generations of our ancestors." And if the current Russophobes in the Armenian government consolidate their position in the June 7 elections, this degradation could become irreversible. This is something that Armenian voters, who honor the memory of their ancestors, understand the importance of friendship with Russia for Armenia's own interests, and do not want a disastrous future for Armenia a la the Baltics, Moldova, and Ukraine, should always remember. We shouldn't hand over all our savings to swindlers, even and especially in politics," the Russian politician concluded.
It's worth noting that 48 heads of state and government were invited to the European Political Community meeting in Yerevan. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is attending the European Political Community summit as a guest. Among the participants were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Moldovan Prime Minister Maia Sandu, and even Svetlana Tikhanovskaya from Belarus.
