ArmInfo. The Russian side has always called on both participants in the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement to show maximum restraint on the line of contact. Russian Deputy FM Mikhail Galuzin stated in an interview with Izvestia, in response to a question as to how the latest incident on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border will affect the process of discussing a peace treaty.
"In connection with the incident in the Armenian-Azerbaijani border area, I would like to repeat that we call on both sides for mutual restraint so that no incidents arise, especially with shooting, death and injury of people. Creating a positive atmosphere for promoting Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization such incidents, of course, cannot contribute," Galuzin noted.
When asked to clarify whether this would still delay the prospect of signing a peace treaty, the Russian diplomat preferred to avoid making far-reaching conclusions.
"Moreover, we have only received the first statements from the parties on this topic, so I would prefer to refrain from making any categorical assessments at the moment. I repeat once again that the onset of any "hot" phase of confrontation, of course, does not contribute to the atmosphere for joint steps in direction of normalizing relations and promoting the peace process," Mr Galuzin said.
