ArmInfo.Armenia urgently needs a new national security strategy. Armine Margaryan, an expert on military-political issues, stated at the forum on Armenia-EU relations in Brussels.
According to her, both strategies adopted in 2007 and 2020 turned out to be far from reality. Of course, threats and directions for overcoming them were indicated, but there is not a word about what means and methods the republic should serve its national interests in connection with the current situation. After the second Artsakh war and the expulsion of Armenians from their homeland, Armenia faced one of the most crucial chapters of its history, and today there is a need to lay strategic concepts as the basis of Armenian statehood. Otherwise, the country's politics will continue to float, which cannot be allowed. "One of the most important questions today is whether Armenia should make a strategic turn or not, and if so, in which direction and towards which power centers" the expert asked.
According to her, the concepts may be different, but all of them should be based on one idea: Armenia should be in the European family. Yerevan must be in an environment in which the presence of democratic values is obvious. "This does not even require proof, but at the core of security, Armenia must maximally diversify its relations with those power centers that share the state's focus on democracy and protection of human rights," Margaryan said, emphasizing the importance of forming strategic allied relations with these centers. She noted that until recently the country was dependent on one power center, which was tantamount to suicide.
