ArmInfo.SCR ended 2021 with a decline in cargo transportation and an increase in the number of passengers. According to the press service of the SCR, in January-December 2021, the South Caucasian Railway company transported 3 million 124 thousand tons of cargo, which is 2.4% less than the same indicator in 2020.
At the same time, a little more than 400 thousand tons were transported in export traffic, which is 17% less than in 2020, and 646.5 thousand tons with a decline of 4.4% in import traffic, as well as more than 2 million tons with an increase of 2.7% by 2020 in local traffic.
In 2021, the SCR trains carried 436 thousand passengers, which is 43% more than in 2020. Last year, 19.5 thousand passengers were transported in international traffic, and 416.5 thousand in local traffic. The significant increase in the number of passengers is associated with the low statistical base of 2020 due to the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The South Caucasian Railway CJSC is a 100% subsidiary of the Russian Railways OJSC and carries out concession management of the Armenian railways. The railway infrastructure of Armenia was transferred to the concession management of the SCR CJSC in accordance with the Concession Agreement signed on February 13, 2008. The term of the concession management is 30 years with the right to prolong it for another 10 years.
