ArmInfo. The 21-kilometer section of the Azerbaijani-controlled Goris-Kapan road will soon become unusable. Head of the Public Council of Armenia, founder of Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs (AIISA) Styopa (Stepan Safaryan told ArmInfo
"If I understand Yerevan's intentions correctly, then with its retaliatory step, namely the establishment of a checkpoint on the Armenian sections of the Goris-Kapan highway, our leadership is trying to deprive any sense of the placement of Azerbaijani checkpoints on the sections they control. Neither Iranian, nor even more so Armenian drivers, certainly, will pass through 4 checkpoints and pay customs duties to two states on a 21-kilometer section of the road. That completely deprives this section of any meaning and sense, "he said.
Yesterday evening, in an interview with Public Television, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan said that Baku had informed Yerevan about the establishment of customs posts in order to implement customs and border procedures on the Goris-Kapan highway section, starting from midnight. "We, in our turn, have already begun work on the establishment of similar customs points. The new Kapan- Tatev road is already ready, which means that Armenia has a safe alternative both for the passage of cars and for the transportation of goods," he stressed.
According to Safaryan's forecasts, this road will gradually simply disappear, which will make all the latest actions of Baku absolutely meaningless. First of all, thanks to the completion of the construction of the Goris-Tatev road, which has already been commissioned and subsequently, the emergence of a second alternative route - financed, including by the EU, the North-South highway with tunnels. "It is clear that due to the complexity of the relief it passes through, the commissioned section of the Goris-Tatev road is far from the best and of course is a temporary solution. However, very soon the construction of the North-South highway will completely close this problem and, accordingly, today Baku's actions have lost any meaning and, accordingly, the prospects for achieving the final result," the analyst summed up.
