ArmInfo. The settlement of the current situation on the Armenian- Azerbaijani border in the Syunik region requires exclusively diplomatic and political steps. We must do everything to rule out a military solution to this problem. Head of the Analytical Center for Globalization and Regional Cooperation Stepan Grigoryan expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.
On the morning of May 12, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces crossed the border in the area of Sev Lich (Black Lake), deepening into the territory of Armenia up to 3.5 kilometers in order to establish control over the lake. On May 13, Yerevan officially turned to the CSTO for help in this regard. And on May 14, acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan turned personally to Russian President Vladimir Putin for help. According to the latest data, as a result of the negotiations, the saboteurs retreated 2 kilometers and today they must finally leave the territory of Armenia.
"At the same time, despite the diverging interests of most of the CSTO countries with the interests of Armenia, contacting the CSTO was the right step. Now, in any case, we need to wait for an answer, although I personally have no special expectations from this body. We see that the CSTO is not ensures the security of Armenia, furthermore, is not going to do it at all, "he said.
According to the political scientist, in this light, Yerevan needs to pin its hopes for ensuring security on Russia. The latter, according to his estimates, also behaves in a rather complicated manner. However, unlike the same Belarus, Kazakhstan and other CSTO member states from Central Asia, it still has security interests that coincide with the interests of Armenia.
In this light, Grigoryan stressed the presence of many other countries, friendly towards Armenia, ready to provide political and other assistance to Yerevan. In the context of the recent statement of the French President on support for Armenia, the political scientist noted that he has absolutely no doubts about the positive response of Paris in response to Yerevan's request for help. "Taking into account France's permanent membership in the UN Security Council, Paris, one way or another, will find ways to support us, even if Russia vetoes the Security Council meeting on the Armenian agenda. In this light, the sequence of steps of our government is absolutely correct. This appeal to the CSTO, an appeal directly to Russia, an appeal to the OSCE countries, and in the end, all this may well be followed by an appeal to the UN Security Council. I think that in the absence of a solution to the problem in the near future, our government will appeal to the UN Security Council. But this will happen only if all other mechanisms are inactive, including Moscow's obligations to comply with all points of the trilateral statement of November 9 last year, "the political scientist summed up.
