ArmInfo.Yerevan and Baku statements by the outgoing head of the European Council, Donald Tusk, are an attempt to distribute all the sisters with earrings. In this light, it is obviously not worth overestimating the words of a European official. ArmInfo expressed the opinion of the Director of the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan.
During the July visit to the South Caucasus, the chairman of the European Council said on July 10 in Yerevan that it was impossible to resolve the Karabakh conflict by military means, thereby emphasizing the need to preserve peace in the region and the right of peoples to self-determination. July 9 in Baku Tusk on behalf of the European Union supported the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
"In general, Tusk's statements fit well into Armenian and Azerbaijani national discourses. It's clear that often such maneuvers of foreign officials and diplomats are not very successful. However, their goal is quite understandable - this is an attempt by Brussels to support at least some interaction in the between Russia and Iran in the region. For the EU, this is necessary, taking into account the problems of the West in relations with these countries, in particular, the constantly worsening situation around Iran, "the political scientist emphasized.
According to his estimates, the European Union does not even have a single position on the Karabakh issue. The current American administration does not have a clear position either, and not only with regard to Karabakh, but also the entire region of the South Caucasus. There is only a single, coordinated position of the OSCE Minsk Group. At this stage, this position, according to Iskandaryan, is reflected in the "Madrid principles" and, in general, is supported by other international structures.
Since 1992, the OSCE Minsk Group has been involved in resolving the Karabakh conflict, represented by the co-chairs from Russia, the United States and France. Currently, the settlement process is nominally based on the Madrid Principles put forward by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs in 2007 in Madrid and updated in 2009.
In this light, the political scientist assesses the recent amendments to the US banning the sale of weapons to Azerbaijan, which can be used to destroy civilian aircraft as a result of the work of Armenian lobbyists. According to his estimates, this decision is not conditioned by the US state interests. The House of Representatives of the US Congress approved legislative amendments proposed by Congressman Brad Sherman prohibiting the provision of weapons to the US that can be used against civilian aircraft taking off and landing at Stepanakert airport.
