ArmInfo. The participation of the European military in the formation of a security zone in Syria looks unlikely. Expert of the Center for Public Relations and Information of the Administration of the Prime Minister of Armenia Karen Veranyan expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.
"The administration of Donald Trump is very actively trying to involve the military from the European Union countries in the formation of a security zone in Syria. Negotiations in this direction, in particular, are conducted with Britain, Germany and France. Washington expects that in general the EU will send more than 1,500 troops to Syria" - he said.
According to expert estimates, Washington believes that the participation of the European military in creating a buffer zone in Syria will allow this operation under the auspices of NATO, which in turn will force Turkey to join it. Thus, the US administration is trying to keep the Turkish army from new actions against the Syrian Kurds.
"Nevertheless, in my opinion, the deployment of European soldiers in Syria seems unlikely, moreover, under the auspices of the Alliance. The main reason is the contradictions and problems within Europe: Brexit, rallies of yellow vests in France, etc. There is one more important reason. The participation of the EU in American operations in Syria will significantly exacerbate the contradictions and confrontation between the EU and Russia. But Brussels will not decide now, " Veranyan concluded.
To note, the military contingent of 83 servicemen of the Armenian armed forces in Syria since February 8 is actually in the Russian group. As Head of the Center for Regional Studies Richard Kirakosyan told ArmInfo earlier, Moscow seeks for an even deeper and more extensive presence of the Armenian military in Syria. However, for Yerevan and the existing humanitarian level is already quite a weighty compromise. "In this light, the Armenian military needs to exercise the utmost degree of caution in order to avoid participation in any hostilities initiated by Moscow," the analyst is convinced. According to press secretary of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia Artsrun Hovhannisyan, Armenian specialists will carry out humanitarian activities related to demining, mine awareness of the population, provision of medical assistance in Aleppo, exclusively outside the zone of military operations. Head of the Armenian defense department Davit Tonoyan also stressed the humanitarian character of the mission.
