ArmInfo. A protest rally is held in front of the Russian Embassy in Armenia demanding that a soldier of the 102nd Russian military base, accused of the murder of a Gyumri resident, be handed over to the jurisdiction of the Armenian justice.
As the ArmInfo correspondent reports from the scene, the protesters note that it is necessary to regulate the movement of Russian soldiers and Russian military equipment on the territory of Armenia. "For this, it is necessary to adopt a new law. Secondly, negotiations with Russia on the responsibility and duties of the employees of the Russian military base in Armenia should begin," one of the protesters said.
The protesters also stated that the Armenian authorities did not take measures to streamline the actions of the soldiers of the Russian military base. "We demand that Russian soldiers respect the legislation of Armenia and observe it on the territory of the country. We also demand a full and fair investigation of the case of the brutal murder of a Gyumri resident by a soldier of the 102nd military base," the protesters said.
The protesters intended to hand over a protest petition to the Russian ambassador in Armenia, however, no one came down to them. As a result, the petition was dropped into the embassy mailbox.
To note, on December 3 in the city of Gyumri a criminal case was initiated into the murder of the 57-year- old street cleaner. The woman died resulting grievous bodily harm. On December 11, the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia reported that a soldier of the 102nd Russian military base stationed in Gyumri was arrested on suspicion of causing serious bodily injuries resulting in death. In connection with this, the Russian Embassy in Armenia issued a statement urging not to politicize the issue, since after the incident opinions began to sound about the need to withdraw the Russian military base from Armenia.
