ArmInfo. The Republican Party of Armenia will not nominate its representative at the elections to the Council of Elders of Yerevan. On August 28, Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, RPA spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov stated this during a conversation with journalists.
The Vice Speaker said that the decision of the RPA was justified by a number of reasons, in particular the fact that after the revolution the party representatives see more serious problems, which include external and internal political challenges and which should be addressed. "We will not take part in the elections to the Yerevan mayor's office, this is due to the fact that today the power has changed in Armenia, the parliament is the main stage, and the external and internal political challenges are much more important for Armenia than the elections to the mayor's office," the vice-speaker said. .
Commenting on the fact that when RPA representatives always took part in the elections to the Council of Elders, Sharmazanov said: "Not always." While changing the situation in the country, politicians can change their position. There are now much more important issues than elections in the metropolitan municipality, "the Vice Speaker said, adding that the party had not yet discussed the issue of supporting one or another candidate.
To note, the ex-mayor of Yerevan, Taron Margaryan, who held this post since 2011, announced the resignation on July 9. Actor Hayk Marutyan (from the Civil Contract party), Zaruhi Postanjyan (leader of the Yerkir Tsirani party), Ararat Zurabyan (Armenian National Movement) will participate in the early elections to the Yerevan City Council in September this year. The "Enlightened Armenia" Party and the "Republic" propose the candidacy of the Minister of Justice of Armenia Artak Zeynalyan.
