ArmInfo.Stepan Mnatsakanyan was appointed chairman of the State Statistics Committee of Armenia for a six-year term. The decision was made on May 17 at a meeting of the Armenian government. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan urged to work very seriously to increase the level of activity of the State Statistics Committee and official statistics in Armenia as a whole.
As the head of government pointed out, the current legislation and logic suggest that statistics should be beyond the influence of political conjuncture. "Our Government intends to solve this problem, leaving the Committee with the former, we create a situation in which it will be balanced so that full independence is ensured, because it is useful for the Government," Pashinyan said. Turning to the chairman of the committee, he expressed the hope that this problem will be solved. "Let's look directly at the facts and state that the public very often questions the statistical committee's not arithmetic, but its content, and that it is very important that we have the right figures and do not doubt them," he said. The Chairman of the State Committee replied that he would try to justify his hopes. Note that the Cabinet of Ministers also appointed members of the State Council on Statistics. Earlier Pashinyan, being in opposition, sharply criticized the activities of the Service and its head Stepan Mnatsakian.
