Analyst: Most likely, Serzh Sargsyan was forced to Geneva talks

ArmInfo. Most likely, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan was forced to meet with his Azerbaijani counterpart in Geneva.  Manvel Sargsyan, the  director of the Armenian Center for Strategic and National Studies, expressed his opinion to ArmInfo.

The board of the arriving in Geneva for the meeting with the  President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev of the President of Armenia has  already landed at Geneva International Airport. The meeting was  initiated and conducted with the mediation of the co-chairs of the  OSCE Minsk Group. The last meeting between Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham  Aliyev was held in June 2016 in St. Petersburg. Earlier in the same  year, a similar meeting was held in Vienna.

"After Aliyev's Baku statements that Armenia was elementary forced to  give up preconditions for the continuation of the negotiation process  on Karabakh, the very meeting itself is problematic." If this is  true, then Aliyev needs this meeting solely to prove his words. "He  does not simply talk to Serzh Sargsyan than, Aliyev needs only the  fact of the meeting, "he stressed.

In this light, the analyst notes that against this background, there  are no special expectations from the meeting. According to him, in  the light of the above, the most urgent issue is why the Armenian  President went for  this meeting after all .

The agreement on the organization of the meeting of the Presidents of  Armenia and Azerbaijan was reached in the presence of the OSCE Minsk  Group co-chairs in New York on September 24 by the Foreign Ministers  of Armenia and Azerbaijan Edward Nalbandian and Elmar Mammadyarov.

After the April aggression of Azerbaijan, with more than 100 victims  from the Armenian side, Yerevan insisted on the implementation of the  proposals on the deployment of mechanisms for investigating incidents  in the conflict zone in order to continue the negotiations at the  highest level. Azerbaijan subsequently refused to sign the  agreement.
