ArmInfo. The National Assembly of Armenia at the meeting on October 4 in the second and final reading made amendments to the Law on Local Self-Government in the City of Yerevan.
According to the First Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Development of Armenia Vache Terteryan, the document submitted by the government proceeds from the requirements of the new Constitution. It streamlines the relationship between the Council of Elders and the capital's mayor. One of the innovations of the new legislative act was the introduction of a provision according to which certain factions of the Yerevan Elders Council will no longer have the opportunity to submit a referendum issue, which caused a sharp negative reaction of the opposition faction "Elk" ("Exit"). This right will be reserved for the mayor and 1/3 of the members of the Council of Elders.
We should note, however, that the factions of the Council of Elders of the capital's municipality had such a right since 2009, but they never took advantage of this right.
