ArmInfo.Peace Corps USA the Swearing-In of 42 New Volunteers solemn ceremony took place in Yerevan.
US Ambassador to Armenia, Mr. Richard Mills, during the conversation with the journalists said that it was a special day for him, USA, and maybe for Armenia. "Today, the volunteers will swear, and will serve for the next two years in Armenia. Besides, Peace Corps celebrates 25th anniversary this year in Armenia. 1000th Volunteer came to Armenia with a mission. People of different ages come to Armenia, learn culture, language, history, the mentality of the nation, then return to USA and share received knowledge and impressions, with that promoting the strengthening of Armenian-American relations", the diplomat said.
Today in Yerevan, 42 Peace Corps Volunteers swore an oath. Soon they will depart to communities across Armenia where they will serve the next two years with local schools, universities. The volunteers have already successfully completed an intensive 11-week training to learn the Armenian language and prepare them for their work in Armenia.
More than 300 guests attended the event. Science and Education Minister Levon Mkrtchyan was among guests.
To note, the first Peace Corps Volunteers arrived in Armenia in 1992. For the recent 25 years, 1000 Peace Corps volunteers have already arrived in Armenia.
Peace Corps USA was founded by the President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and had 3 aims: if necessary to support other countries people, to promote right perception of Americans in other countries, to help in right perception of other cultures by Americans.
