ArmInfo. The Constitution referendum in Turkey will cause destabilization in that country, Alexander Iskandaryan, the Director of Institute for Caucasus stated on April 16 at a press conference in Yerevan.
According to Iskandaryan, this referendum was just another step to turn Tukey into sultanate. In this respect the expert does not rule out the persecution of the liberal part of Turkish society, which mainly stood against the referendum and expansion of President's responsibilities. "Of course, no one will be hanged, but there will be certain punishing measures that will lead to destabilization, which may last until next elections," the political expert stated.
Iskandaryan thinks also that the discussion on joining EU held in Turkey is artificial. " there are no negotiations and there is no prospective of Turkey's joining EU," he mentioned. At that, the expert mentioned that in difference to EU, this country has an essential importance for NATO, because, from geopolitical point, it is situated in a key region . "Hence, all the whispers about Turkey's excluding from NATO after this referendum are none," the expert mentioned.
According to preliminary data, on April 16 for a little bit more that 51% of Turkish nationals voted for Constitution modifications in respect to transition from parliamentary to the presidential model of country administration. The population of the most developed cities of Turkey, such Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara voted against any modifications to the Constitution. Erdogan won thanks to his traditional electorate in other vilayets of the country. According to appropriate modifications to the Constitution, the President of Turkey will remain at his post until the year of 2029.
