ArmInfo. Armenian Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan responded to the statement by Andranik Kocharyan, a representative of the ruling Civil Contract party and chairman of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Defense and Security, about military service.
Noting that she is the mother of two soldiers, a fact of which she is very proud, she admitted that she felt great pain from Kocharyan's careless statement. "I consider it necessary to emphasize that our worthy and bright young men serve in the Armenian Army, who prefer to fulfill their duty to the Motherland even before completing their education," the Minister of Health wrote, wishing all soldiers a successful service.
As a reminder, the day before, Andranik Kocharyan, responding to journalists' questions about why his son did not serve in the army, stated that he was exempted from service due to his knowledge. Emphasizing that his son is a highly qualified specialist, Kocharyan, addressing the journalist, added: "If you possessed such knowledge, you would not have served either."
This statement sparked a wave of discontent in Armenian society. The following day, the parliamentarian apologized, explaining that he only wanted to emphasize how highly the Armenian state values education and scientific activity. According to him, those who are willing to serve the state by utilizing their scientific potential are given such an opportunity. Kocharyan also noted that his eldest son is engaged in science, and his youngest served in the Armenian Armed Forces, including participating in the 44-day Artsakh War.
