ArmInfo. Armenia intends to join the International Big Cat Alliance. The draft Framework Agreement "On the International Big Cat Alliance," submitted by the Armenian government for ratification, was discussed at the plenary session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on March 25.
As RA Minister of Environment, Ambartsum Matevosyan, noted in his speech, ratification of this agreement will allow for the exchange of best practices in the protection and conservation of the big cat family. The goal of this framework agreement is to promote international cooperation in the conservation of big cats and prevent their population decline. Armenia signed it in 2025. The Caucasian leopard occupies a special place in Armenia, a country rich in biodiversity. Its conservation is not only about protecting one species but also about maintaining ecological balance and habitat sustainability. "Other cat species, such as the lynx, the European wildcat, and the Pallas's cat, are also found in the Republic of Armenia," Matevosyan said. The latter two species are even listed in the Red Book.
According to the minister, Armenia's membership will enable the development of international cooperation, joint research, and the application of best practices in biodiversity conservation.
