Armenian Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan, during a meeting with a delegation led by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Martha Kos, praised the development of relations between Armenia and the European Union, emphasizing that this is the EU Commissioner's second visit to Armenia in the past six months, demonstrating active and effective cooperation between the parties.
According to the press service of the Armenian Interior Ministry, speaking about the EU visa liberalization process, Sargsyan noted that Armenia will receive a final progress assessment report in May and expressed confidence that the parties will mutually achieve satisfactory results.
As the lead negotiator for the Armenian side, Sargsyan presented tangible results achieved since the beginning of the dialogue and reaffirmed Armenia's full commitment to the high-quality and full implementation of the action plan. The Armenian Interior Minister emphasized ongoing work on integrated migration and border management, as well as document security.
The importance of Armenia's appointment of a liaison officer with Europol in the context of law enforcement cooperation was emphasized.
Kos praised the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Minister Sargsyan personally in the visa liberalization process between the EU and Armenia. She noted that Armenia is a reliable partner for the European Union, emphasizing that it is currently the only country with which the EU is actively engaged in this area.
She also mentioned a survey conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), according to which public trust in the police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has significantly increased. Issues related to security, countering hybrid threats, and combating cyberattacks were also discussed at the meeting.
It is worth noting that visa liberalization negotiations between Armenia and the EU began in December 2024. The key reform areas include document security, border and migration management, mobility and asylum policy, the fight against corruption and organized crime, and the protection of citizens' fundamental rights. Armenian Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan and the European Commission's Deputy Director- General for Migration and Home Affairs, Johannes Luchner, noted at the time that the process had no deadline for completing negotiations.
