ArmInfo. Konstantin Zatulin, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, believes that a probable reason for Iran's attack on Azerbaijan could be Baku's close cooperation with Israel and the overall political line pursued by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. In an interview with the publication "Podiom," Zatulin also noted that "there must be more compelling reasons."
Curiously, Iran, at the level of the Foreign Ministry and the General Staff, has already denied any involvement in the attack on the airport in Nakhchivan. However, independent experts are inclined to believe that Azerbaijan is thus preparing the ground for possible involvement in the conflict against Iran on the side of the United States and Israel. "If these reports are true, it means either drones or other weapons were previously launched from Azerbaijani territory toward Iran, or because those the Iranians consider to be participants in the operation against Iran are currently in Azerbaijan. It's unlikely they would have launched any missiles or drones toward Azerbaijan out of nowhere. If this isn't a mistake, Iran will explain its actions," the Russian MP said.
According to Zatulin, the US and Israel are trying to play the card of national minorities in Iran. While the Americans are betting on the Kurds, Baku is betting on ethnic Azerbaijanis in Iran. "We know that Azerbaijan not only cooperates closely with Turkey but is also developing its cooperation with Israel. During the 12-Day War, Israel called on Azerbaijanis in Iran to rise up against the government, to 'take their fate into their own hands,' and so on. These were statements made personally by Prime Minister Netanyahu. And, of course, they are now trying to play the national minority card in Iran in every possible way. The Americans are playing the Kurds. I don't rule out the possibility of similar attempts against Azerbaijanis in Iran. Although, in my opinion, these attempts are unlikely to be realized, since many members of Iran's political and military elite are ethnic Azerbaijanis. Khamenei himself was Azerbaijani, as was his son. Iranian President Pezeshkian is an ethnic Azerbaijani," he added.
Zatulin emphasized that he does not believe the attacks are a result of Azerbaijan maintaining ties with Israel. According to him, there must be more compelling reasons.
