ArmInfo. Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the first president of Armenia and leader of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) party, has reaffirmed his support for Samvel Karapetyan, founder of the Strong Armenia party and head of the Tashir Group of Companies.
In his Facebook post, responding to criticism he received for his February 27 statement regarding the division of the Armenian opposition, Ter-Petrosyan stated that the reaction had exceeded his expectations. "The reaction, to my surprise, was more intense than I expected. Samvel Karapetyan is capable of uniting a strong government around himself, consisting of professional economists and technocrats, whose primary goal will be to strengthen the country and improve the social situation of the population," Ter-Petrosyan said.
At the same time, the veteran of Armenian politics expressed confidence that if Karapetyan wins, he will not abandon the agreements signed between Armenia and other countries, but, on the contrary, will further strengthen Armenia's commitments to them. "If Karapetyan wins, the unconstitutional and treasonous campaign unleashed by the state against the Church will automatically disappear, which will undoubtedly restore the unity of all Armenians," Ter-Petrosyan concluded. Recall, on February 27, Ter-Petrosyan stated that months of negotiations had yielded no results and that they were failing to unite the opposition. He stated that it could have fatal consequences for Armenian statehood. He also expressed his belief that businessman Karapetyan could be the one to unite the opposition and lead the country out of this crisis. Several experts and political figures had criticized Ter- Petrosyan's statement, believing that the first president of Armenia was thus doing a disservice to Karapetyan in the upcoming parliamentary elections on June 7.
