ArmInfo. During a meeting with Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan, Iranian Defense Minister, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh has conveyed Tehran's stance against any geopolitical shifts in the South Caucasus region and any intervention by external actors. Papikyan is currently in the Iranian capital on an official visit.
According to IRNA, referring to the historical, civilizational, and social ties between the two nations, Nasirzadeh described the ties between Tehran and Yerevan as deep and robust. He expressed appreciation for Armenia's stance in condemning the aggressions of the United States and the Zionist regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He emphasized that the Islamic Republic opposes any disruptions to the region's geopolitics, stating, "The security of the region must be ensured through interaction and cooperation among the regional countries, and Tehran is sensitive to the interference of extra-regional countries." Brigadier General Nasirzadeh also underscored the importance of preserving the territorial integrity of countries in the region and voiced opposition to any foreign interference in regional developments. He added, "Some interventions are driven by malicious intent and could threaten the region's stability."
The DefenseMinister considered the bilateral defense cooperation between Iran and Armenia within the framework of strengthening relations, consolidating stability, and enhancing regional security, adding, "The Islamic Republic of Iran does not seek war, but if war is imposed on the country, it will defend itself with full force and will teach the enemies a lesson they will not forget." For his part, Papikyan highlighted the long-standing historical and neighborly relations between the two countries, considering the development of cooperation in various fields, especially defense cooperation, as significant. Expressing gratitude for the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for regional security and stability, particularly along the shared borders of the two countries, he emphasized, "Armenia will never be the source or origin of any threat to its historical neighbor, and it believes that Iran's stability guarantees the stability of the region".
It is worth noting that the Armenian Ministry of Defense, in its statement regarding the meeting of the two countries' defense ministers in Tehran, limited itself to general remarks about discussing defense cooperation and regional developments.
Recall, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Khalil Shirgholami, speaking to journalists today, emphasized the high level of relations between the two countries in all spheres, including political, economic, and cultural, which are developing on the basis of mutual trust. He also assured that the societies of both countries will witness new achievements in Armenian-Iranian relations in the future. The Iranian diplomat also expressed gratitude to the relevant Armenian authorities for taking steps to resolve the situation surrounding the protests outside the Iranian Embassy in Armenia. According to him, a small number of people gathered in front of the embassy and shouted slogans calling for a change of government in Iran, which deserves condemnation. The Iranian ambassador also commented on the possibility of holding Armenian-Iranian exercises in a conversation with journalists, not ruling out their future implementation, even on a larger scale. He recalled that Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan is currently on an official visit to Tehran, which also indicates a rise in relations between the two countries. Shirgolami noted that the Armenian-Iranian border has always been a boundary of peace and is of great importance to both countries, and military cooperation is based on these historical ties, the inviolability of borders, and the preservation of the territorial integrity of the two countries. Note, Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan, summing up the results of 2025, stated that no joint Armenian-Iranian exercises are planned for this year.
