ArmInfo. An event of exceptional significance has occurred at the National Art Gallery. Experts have discovered another work hidden behind Martiros Saryan's sketch "Peasant Women in a Field" (1914) restoration work on paintings held in the Gallery's collection. This work had been hidden from view for over a century and has now been returned to the art space.
As Vigen Galstyan, one of the curators of the exhibition organized for this occasion at the National Gallery, noted that experts are inclined to believe that the discovered still life by Saryan dates back to 1910. He mentioned that the artist destroyed at least five of his paintings that year and did not rule out the possibility that restoration and research work could lead to new discoveries.
The newly discovered Saryan painting is currently being exhibited as part of the exhibition "Museum Work: Discoveries," an initiative of the National Gallery of Armenia aimed at scientifically rethinking and updating the museum's collection using modern research and digital tools.
The exhibition will run until April 15 of this year.
