ArmInfo. The transfer of the Syunik Corridor to other countries in exchange for Armenia's right to exist has become an alternative agenda item as a result of the "peace" brought by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, according to former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian.
The diplomat labeled Pashinyan's recent statement in an interview that the US, through the TRIPP (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity) project, has guaranteed Armenia's existence for the next 99 years as unbelievable. "Pashinyan says, 'The world's number one superpower declares that Armenia will exist as a sovereign, independent state for 99 years.' What can you say? First of all, no one gave him such a 'guarantee.' It's just a figment of his imagination. But regardless of what Pashinyan may have understood, this statement serves as evidence of the painful and pathetic state to which this government has led Armenia," Oskanian believes.
The former Armenian Foreign Minister is confident that this statement also reveals the true thoughts of Pashinyan, who talks day and night about peace and sovereignty. According to him, his subconscious inadvertently acknowledges and proclaims aloud that in reality, they have brought Armenia to a point that where its existence as an independent state is in question, and some third party must 'say' that Armenia can exist for the time being. "What is this, if not a pathetic situation?" he asked.
The diplomat emphasized that over Armenia's 30 years of independence, amidst the ongoing and then frozen conflict, the issue of Armenia's existence as an independent state has never been a subject of discussion, doubt, or negotiation. He recalled that only the status of Artsakh was discussed.
"The transfer of the Syunik Corridor to other countries in exchange for Armenia's right to exist became an alternative agenda item as a result of the 'peace' brought by Pashinyan. Moreover, this right to exist is also time-limited. And this is presented as an advantage. In reality, it could be worse: let's say we cede the Syunik Corridor in exchange for a promise of 50 years of existence. Or perhaps another 20 years will be added to our country's 'possibility of existence' by ceding part of Tavush.
Diplomatic and political fiascos no longer surprise anyone. What is truly surprising is the loud admission that, in reality, there is no peace and that there is a danger that Armenia may not even exist. This dander, regardless of any promises made by third parties that were not actually made, represents a very tangible threat if this government does not come to power. The danger is so real that even they themselves admit it," Oskanian concluded.
