Azerbaijan Threatens Armenia on Eve of Vance Visit Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh Targeted
On the eve of VP's trip to Armenia, Azerbaijan's mouthpiece Caliber warned that Armenia will feel Baku's wrath if Pashinyan fails to suppress the elected representatives of the Armenian Christians of Nagorno Karabakh who were ethno-religiously cleansed from their homeland in 2023.
"Indulging the ideas of a 'mythical Armenia' may ultimately push the country to the margins of the real world", Caliber cautioned.
Azerbaijan's threat was prompted by Pashinyan's failure to prevent the political leadership of Nagorno Karabakh from honoring the Swiss parliamentarians Erich Vontobel and Stefan Muller-Altermatt, and Christian Solidarity International (CSI) for promoting the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh.
This initiative supports the Swiss Government's parliamentary-mandated efforts to convene a peace forum between Azerbaijan and the representatives of the ethnically cleansed Armenian community of Nagorno Karabakh.
Such scarcely veiled threats show that Aliyev views the Republic of Armenia itself, even when dressed up as the "Real Armenia", as "mythical", and is prepared, if necessary, to force it into to the "margins of the real world".
What was done to ethno-religiously cleansed Nagorno Karabakh can also be done to the "Real Armenia".
Aliyev's words and deed leave the impression he views Pashinyan's "Real Armenia" as no more that a transit point on the road to "Western Azerbaijan".
The Swiss Peace Initiative was formally adopted by the Swiss Parliament in early 2025. It mandates the Swiss Federal Council to convene within one year an international peace forum aimed at facilitating negotiations-under international supervision or with the participation of globally significant actors-on the safe and voluntary return of the historically Armenian population to Nagorno-Karabakh.
To support the implementation of this mandate, an all-party parliamentary committee of 19 Swiss parliamentarians was formed in Bern on 26 May 2025. This committee is mandated to promote the necessary international mechanisms to implement the objectives of the legally binding decision of the Swiss Parliament. The UK statement adds to a growing chorus of international voices calling for lasting and inclusive solutions to the long-standing crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.
