ArmInfo. Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan called claims that his country is systematically reducing interaction with Russia in favor of the European Union incorrect. He made this statement to journalists in Moscow after a meeting with Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, Interfax reports.
In particular, one question stated that "the Armenian government's recent course resembles a systematic policy of reducing interaction with Russia." Simonyan was asked whether Yerevan fears that Moscow will ultimately turn its back on it, and that the European Union will not support it.
"I do not share your opinion. I believe that Armenia, as a sovereign state, has the right to balance its policies. Armenia does not intend to take sides or work against anyone," the speaker responded.
"Armenia has its own foreign policy, its own vision, especially after the 2020 war. I think the answers to the question you ask can be found in what has happened since 2020. The perception that Armenia is trying to change course from one pole to the other is incorrect. Armenia will not be at either pole, and it will not be at the opposite pole," he stated.
Following her talks with Simonyan, Matviyenko told reporters that Russia wants "Armenia to be prosperous and prosperous, and to have a stable political situation in Armenia, because we greatly value, appreciate, and value our ties with the Armenian people."
According to her, the Russian side would be prepared to send observers to the parliamentary elections in Armenia if Yerevan so decides and extends an invitation. This issue was discussed among others during the meeting with Simonyan.
"I believe our parliamentary dialogue will continue, as it is in the interests of both states, it is in the interests of our peoples," the Federation Council Speaker said.
