Within the framework of official visit to Armenia, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Armenia Suren Papikyan received the Chief of the Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces, General Anil Chauhan. The meeting was also attended by Ambassador of India to Armenia Nilakshi Saha Singha.
According to the press service of the Armenian Defense Ministry Minister Papikyan highly appreciated the current level of Armenia-India cooperation in the field of defence, stressing the importance of regular implementation of cooperation programs.
General Chauhan expressed the willingness of the Indian Armed Forces to continue developing cooperation in existing areas and initiate new areas of mutual interest. A number of issues related to regional and international security were also discussed during the meeting.
Previously, Indian media reported that Armenia, along with the United States and France, is one of the three largest buyers of Indian defense products. Over the past four years, Armenia has concluded several deals with India for the purchase of missiles, artillery pieces, rocket systems, radars, body armor, night vision devices, as well as a wide range of ammunition and artillery shells. Moreover, Armenia became the first foreign buyer of the Indian-designed Akash air defense system.
In late September 2022, Armenia signed a contract worth over $250 million to purchase weapons from India, including Indian-made Pinaka 214mm multiple launch rocket systems and rockets for them, unspecified anti-tank missile systems, and various munitions. In the fall of 2023, Indian Defence Research Wing reported that in early August, the Indian defence company Bharat Forge LTD transferred six ATAGS towed 155mm howitzers to Armenia under a contract worth $155.5 million. The deal provides for the delivery of 90 artillery pieces of this type to Armenia over three years.
