ArmInfo. President Iliana Yotova met and held consultations yesterday with Raya Nazaryan, Speaker of the 51st National Assembly of Bulgaria, regarding the appointment of a new prime minister. The president holds these meetings as part of the constitutional procedure for appointing an interim government.
According to Nazaryan, a politician should not serve as interim prime minister because a sense of impartiality is required. "Otherwise, suspicions of interference in the electoral process will arise," Nazaryan explained her refusal to head the country's interim government.
According to Bulgarian law, the president can select a candidate for the post of interim head of government from the so-called "house register," which includes ten civil servants, including the speaker of parliament, the governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) and his deputies, the ombudsman and his deputy, and the chairman of the Audit Chamber and his deputy.
The presidential administration is expected to announce a schedule of meetings with other potential candidates this week. Some of them have already publicly declined the offer.
After the formation of the interim government, Yotova is expected to announce the date of early parliamentary elections.
It is worth noting that Raya Nazaryan, born in Varna in 1985, is a lawyer and politician. She is a member of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party. She has served as the Speaker of the National Assembly (unicameral parliament) of Bulgaria since June 20, 2024.
