ArmInfo. US President Donald Trump said he would impose 100% tariffs on Canadian products if Ottawa signs a trade deal with China.
"If Governor Carney thinks he's turning Canada into a transit point for Chinese goods bound for the US, he's sorely mistaken," he wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
Trump believes that Chinese businesses, if allowed into the Canadian market, will displace local companies. "If Canada signs a deal with China, we will immediately impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods," the US president warned.
In his post, Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Currie as a governor, not a head of government. In the past, the US president regularly referred to Currie's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, in the same way. Trump was thus implying that, in his opinion, Canada should renounce its independence and join the United States.
