ArmInfo. The tariffs the US President is threatening against European countries participating in military exercises initiated by Denmark in Greenland could undermine transatlantic relations, according to European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen.
"Tariffs will undermine transatlantic relations and create a dangerous downward spiral. Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to defending its sovereignty," the EC President wrote on social media late Saturday.
Von der Leyen emphasized that for the EU, territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law. They are of vital importance to Europe and the international community as a whole.
"We have consistently emphasized our shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, including through NATO. The pre-coordinated Danish exercises conducted with allies meet the need to strengthen security in the Arctic and pose no threat to anyone," the EC President stated.
She reaffirmed "full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland," noting the importance of dialogue to resolve the situation.
European Council President António Costa also expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing Europe's commitment to the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty on the social media platform X.
US President Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform TruthSocial on Saturday that he would impose tariffs on several European countries starting in February in connection with their participation in military exercises in Greenland.
"Effective February 1, 2026, all of these countries—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland—will pay a 10% tariff on all goods shipped to the United States," Trump stated.
He added that, effective June 1, 2026, the tariffs on these countries will increase to 25% and will remain in effect "until an agreement is reached for Washington to fully purchase Greenland."
Trump explained that he was dissatisfied with these countries' deployment of troops to Greenland "for some incomprehensible reason."
