ArmInfo. Armenia has never taken and will not take any steps against the state and friendly people of Iran and will not participate in such processes, as stated by RA National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan on January 16, referring to remarks made by the Islamic Republic of Iran's Ambassador to Yerevan.
Earlier, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Khalil Shirgholami, commenting on the agreements between Yerevan and Washington on the "Trump Route" project, has expressed concerns about the project's potential use in Washington's security policy framework. "We have told our Armenian partners that we trust them, but we are dealing with America, which has taken action against Iran. We don't trust America, and we are concerned that America could use this project as part of its security policy," Shirgholami stated, noting that Tehran had conveyed these concerns to Yerevan.
Alen Simonyan emphasized that TRIPP creates significant economic opportunities for all countries in the region, including Iran. Addressing the concerns expressed by Iran, the Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly noted that, in his opinion, these fears will dissipate after the current internal tensions in Iran are resolved. "I believe that once the current tension in their country is somehow resolved, they will realize that these concerns are unfounded," Simonyan emphasized.
When asked about the possibility of the US using Armenian territory to conduct operations against Iran, the Speaker responded that such concerns are exaggerated. "Iran has dozens of immediate neighbors. The border with Armenia is only 23 kilometers long. During recent operations, if I'm not mistaken, an aircraft left the United States, conducted operations, and returned," Simonyan said. He also added that the Armenian side is in constant contact with Iran. The Speaker also noted that he has not yet met with the newly appointed Iranian ambassador to Armenia, but if he does, he will reaffirm that Armenia has not taken any anti-Iranian steps.
During a government meeting the day before, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, responded to a question about whether Armenia's policy of balance and reconciliation within the TRIPP, particularly with regard to Russia and Iran, was being violated. He stated that they have consistently emphasized in their contacts with partners from the Islamic Republic of Iran that the Republic of Armenia will not take any actions against Iran's state security and expects a similar approach from Iran.
