According to former German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, EU membership should be offered to Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Norway. The politician suggested that Greenland could join the EU in 2026 or 2027.
Former German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck proposed inviting Greenland to the EU to discourage US President Donald Trump from seizing the territory. Habeck made this proposal in an article in The Guardian.
"Right now is the time to clearly offer Greenland EU membership, and, by extension, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Norway—a proposal that was recently discussed in the European Parliament," Habeck explained.
Greenland left the European Community in 1985 after twelve years of membership. It joined the EU in 1973 as a region of Denmark. According to Habeck, "in a completely changed world, the mood has changed, and Europe must respond [to Trump's challenge] accordingly." The proposal for Greenland should be "pragmatic and gradual," he believes. According to the politician's calculations, the island could join the EU in 2026 or 2027.
Greenland, with a population of approximately 57,000, remains an autonomous territory of Denmark, which has administered the island for over 300 years. The island has proven deposits of 43 of the 50 elements necessary for the development of modern electronics and military technology, which the US government has designated as "critical" to national security.
