ArmInfo. The claim that Armenia has moved closer to peace thanks to the government's diplomatic efforts is false, according to international affairs expert Suren Sargsyan.
According to him, several days ago, US President Donald Trump made a statement about exerting pressure to establish Armenian-Azerbaijani peace, which went virtually unnoticed despite its exceptional importance. "I think it's clear to everyone that this is solely about putting pressure on Azerbaijan, as Armenia was already under pressure and was ready to make additional concessions. In other words, the change in Baku's position didn't stem from Armenia's actions and is not based on Armenia's interests, but rather on Washington's logic. The fact that Trump's advisor, Witkoff, did not visit Armenia last March, but only went to Baku for talks, once again demonstrates that Armenia took a passive stance in this process, and there was simply nothing left to say to Yerevan. Armenia has clearly fulfilled and continues to fulfill a wide range of concessions. Any changes in the situation between the beginning and end of 2024, are not due to the actions of the Armenian authorities, but rather a geopolitical process directed by Trump within the framework of serving American interests - from Central Asia to the South Caucasus, Turkey, and Europe," the political scientist noted.
At the same time, as Suren Sargsyan noted, a certain stabilization of the situation does not mean that Azerbaijan has ceased to consider Armenia a hostile state, and there is ample evidence of this, from official statements to specific actions. "Therefore, the policy of the United States under Trump's leadership has played a decisive role in these processes, while the Armenian authorities have no real influence on them," the political scientist emphasized.
