ArmInfo. The RA State Revenue Committee has provided clarifications regarding the information published by the newspaper Zhogovurd about the smuggling of a large batch of cell phones into Armenia.
Earlier, the newspaper reported that the phones were smuggled through the Agarak checkpoint on the border with Iran. It was about 400 iPhones from Dubai, and Garnik Margaryan, head of the SRC's Internal Security Department, oversaw the process.
"First of all, we emphasize that the incident of undeclared goods being imported into the Republic of Armenia through the Agarak checkpoint, as described in the article, was only detected thanks to the control and risk management mechanisms within the State Revenue Committee. Based on these mechanisms appropriate official and legal measures were immediately taken. The assertion of an attempt to conceal the incident or "ensure illegal import" doesn't correspond to reality and contradicts the logic of the facts themselves, as the State Revenue Committee initiated an administrative investigation into the violation of customs regulations in this case, and all materials regarding the possible involvement of officials were transferred to the competent investigative body in accordance with established procedures. The Committee will fully support the investigation, regardless of the position held by any individual. At the same time, we consider unfounded assumptions and insinuations regarding personal and friendly ties of the Committee employees to be unacceptable," the State Revenue Committee's clarification reads.
