ArmInfo. During a visit to the Nubarashen Penitentiary, Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan pointed out the inconsistency of prison conditions for detainees with international standards and the necessity for a new building.
According to the press service of the HRD, Manasyan came to this conclusion after visiting the prison, accompanied by the facility's director, Vahan Nasoyan, and representatives from the HRD office. During the visit, she inspected the prison grounds, reviewed the conditions of detention for prisoners, and held discussions with them, listening to their concerns and wishes.
"Although the state is already discussing this matter, the human rights defender emphasizes that the issue must be resolved as soon as possible. This is crucial for guaranteeing the rights of individuals deprived of their liberty and ensuring adequate working conditions for correctional staff," she noted.
She also assured that ensuring rights in places of detention is always a top priority for the Human Rights Defender. "Identified issues are regularly presented publicly, included in the human rights defender's reports, and discussed with the competent authorities with a demand for a prompt and comprehensive solution," Manasyan concluded.
Recall, earlier, during a conversation with journalists in the Armenian parliament, Garnik Danielyan, member of parliament from the opposition "Armenia" faction, stated that the number of deaths in Armenian prisons had reached 23 in the past year, with only eight being suicides. He had previously reported that the poor conditions in Armenia's penitentiary institutions had led to the rise in prison mortality. Specifically, he pointed out the lack of basic living conditions, sanitary and hygienic conditions, poor water quality and insufficient medical care in the penal institution.
