ArmInfo. Amidst the agreements reached between Russia and the United States regarding Ukraine and Europe's disagreement with these agreements, Armenia has become a tool for advancing the interests of other countries, as stated by opposition MP Garnik Danielyan from the "Armenia" bloc in a conversation with journalists. He was reacting to the statement by European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas that "Armenia has asked the EU for help to prevent external interference ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections."
The MP believes that, unlike Armenia, Georgia has managed to avoid becoming such a tool and noted that he considers this as a threat to the country. In this regard, he pointed out the double standards demonstrated by Europe. Specifically, the fact that European colleagues have still not provided a clear assessment of the repressions in Armenia, the presence of political prisoners in the country, and the arbitrary actions of law enforcement agencies. "The European Union turns a blind eye to cases of persecution of people for their views. While those who sow hatred with their statements remain free," the opposition member noted.
The MP expressed his conviction that, under the pretext of combating hybrid wars, all resources provided to Armenia by the EU will continue to be used to suppress the opposition. "This is precisely why Armenia turned to the EU, since the current government has no chance of being re-elected in 2026. Furthermore, the authorities could, as some European countries, such as Romania, have done, simply announce their disagreement with the election results," the MP asserted.
He also suggested that the "threat of interference" refers specifically to Russia, noting that the current government refers to anyone who disagrees with its stance as "spies." However, as the MP noted, despite this, the authorities are in no rush to leave the EAEU and even attend the organization's events, while simultaneously making various statements about their intention to join the EU.
In this regard, he mentioned Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk's statement that "Armenia will have to choose between the EU and the EAEU" and expressed his conviction that, under the current circumstances, Armenia has no alternative, as Armenian markets are not diversified and the country's economy remains dependent on the EAEU market.
