ArmInfo. Unknown individuals have stolen a 15th-century Gospel in Armenia. The directorate of the Mesrop Mashtots Museum-Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran) reported this.
"We have received information with deep concern that unknown individuals have stolen a 15th-century Gospel kept in the Taperakan community of the Ararat region. This fact necessitates a solution to the problem of manuscripts being stored in private homes and church institutions without adequate security and storage conditions. The Directorate of the Matenadaran has stated its readiness to, at any opportunity, accept these manuscripts, if not as gifts, then at least for temporary storage. We reaffirm our commitment and are ready to use our material and professional resources to properly preserve manuscripts in private or community ownership. We guarantee that all manuscripts will be placed in the Matenadaran repository in accordance with a pre-signed temporary storage agreement, which defines the owner's rights and the Matenadaran's obligations," the statement reads. It emphasizes that, while the "Return of Manuscripts to the Matenadaran" campaign is bringing spiritual treasures back to Armenia from various auctions and private collections around the world, examples of spiritual history are being plundered and disappearing within Armenia. "Cooperation with the Matenadaran in this area is an indicator of civic maturity and responsibility," the museum's statement notes.
