ArmInfo. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan proposed an innovation in the canons of Sunday liturgy in the churches of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC).
"In 301, the Armenian Apostolic Church was established by the state, by a state decision. I believe it would be appropriate for choirs in all churches to sing the national anthem of the Republic of Armenia before Sunday liturgies-at 10:55 a.m.," he wrote on social media last night.
As the Prime Minister stated this morning during a Facebook live broadcast, this is in accordance with the text of the liturgy. It mentions a "supreme state," so it is important to sing the anthem, emphasizing the connection between the "supreme" and "earthly" states.
Furthermore, it turns out Pashinyan has decided to take his patriotism even further. "I believe we should also discuss the issue of displaying the national flag of the Republic of Armenia either at the entrance to or inside churches located within the territory of the Republic of Armenia, which is an accepted practice in a number of countries," he said.
As a reminder, according to the Constitution, Armenia is a secular state, where church and state are separated. At the same time, the "exclusive mission" of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) in preserving national identity is recognized.
