ArmInfo. A 67-year-old inmate died at the Armavir penitentiary on December 2. Lawyer Zaruhi Postanjyan reported this on her Facebook page.
She stated that, according to media reports, the inmate's health deteriorated sharply at 4:05 a.m., prompting an ambulance to be called to the prison, and 25 minutes later, biological death was registered. Regarding the situation, the lawyer noted that despite the pressure being exerted on her, including the confiscation of her phone, she will continue to voice and present complaints regarding prison conditions in Armenia. "I will continue to voice and present complaints regarding prison conditions in Armenia. I will continue to do so while protecting human dignity and not allowing inhumane or degrading treatment of prisoners, which is their absolute right. Nothing can prevent me from fulfilling my professional duties with dignity, professionalism, and complete dedication to protecting fundamental human rights and freedoms," Postanjyan wrote.
As a reminder, on November 12, journalist Roza Vardanyan warned of an increase in prison deaths. According to her, 20 deaths have been recorded in prisons in the past 11 months alone, and she warned that this number could increase if the state does not begin to pay attention to the fates of prisoners. According to the latest data, 22 prisoners have died in Armenian prisons in the first 11 months of this year, including by suicide. As Garnik Danielyan, a member of the opposition "Armenia" faction in the National Assembly of Armenia, noted, the deplorable conditions in Armenia's penal institutions have led to the increase in prison mortality. Most often, the MP noted, despite acute health problems and numerous complaints, prisoners are not transferred to a medical facility, they are not provided with adequate medical care, and there is also a shortage of medications. He also drew attention to the lack of basic living conditions, sanitary and hygienic conditions, water quality, and adequate medical care in penal institutions.
