ArmInfo. The third President of the Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, unlike the current ruler, had clear and consistent approaches to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. This is according to Tigran Abrahamyan, Secretary of the opposition "I Have the Honor" faction of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
"Although the negotiating package of the last three decades was misrepresented, it provides a wealth of information not only about the dynamics of progress in the negotiations but also about the principles and positions of the country's leadership. During his presidency, Pashinyan himself expressed three different positions on the Artsakh settlement: first, he spoke of Artsakh's self-determination, then of its incorporation into the Republic of Armenia, and then of Artsakh's declaration of its inclusion in Azerbaijan," the MP noted.
The opposition figure emphasized that the 2008-2018 package, which not only enshrined the right to self- determination as a principle but also provided for its implementation through a legally binding national referendum (in 1988, 75% of Artsakh's population was Armenian), has undergone certain stages of change. "However, the most striking thing is that there were clear 'red lines' and principles that were not only not crossed but were defended by all means necessary: the letter to the Russian president is one example of this. And most importantly, Serzh Sargsyan's fundamental approaches to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, unlike the current ruler, were clear and unchanging," concluded Tigran Abrahamyan.
As a reminder, the Armenian government recently presented a number of documents on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. According to government officials, the right to self-determination for Nagorno-Karabakh meant "self-government" within Azerbaijan.
