ArmInfo. Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan's health has worsened in the Armenian National Security Service's detention center. He has been moved to a new cell and is not being allowed to see doctors. This was reported by Zaruhi Postanjyan, the lawyer for Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan.
The lawyer stated that the detention center's management is not allowing her to inspect the conditions of the new cell where her client has been moved. She expressed concern that new inmates have been transferred to this cell and that she is unaware of the danger they pose to Ghukasyan, given that there was a previous attempted murder against her client. Furthermore, Postanjyan noted that her client's condition continues to deteriorate; he has lost weight and looks pale.
"I have serious concerns for his life, health, and physical safety. I have been informed that new people have been placed in his cell. Meanwhile, the head of the penitentiary, Mr. Tamaryan, the Minister of Justice, Ms. Galyan, and other officials refuse to provide any information about Vardan Ghukasyan's conditions of detention, including the individuals held in his cell. Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan and Mr. Kamo Manukyan also refuse to provide any medical documents or information, citing so-called 'medical confidentiality.' Since November 8, 2025, the Armenian authorities have illegally prevented independent doctors from examining Vardan Ghukasyan, despite the threat to his health," the lawyer emphasized.
As a reminder, Vardan Ghukasyan was arrested on October 21st in connection with a bribery case. On October 26th, his lawyers announced a new case against him for "public calls to renounce Armenia's sovereignty" in connection with his statements about a union with Russia and Belarus. On November 21st, it was announced that Vardan Ghukasyan had been charged with a third offense, under Article 297 of the country's Criminal Code (hooliganism committed by a group of persons using information or communication technologies-the maximum penalty is up to five years in prison).
